Full moon painted on a fan ("sensu")
"Sensu" is originally a tool to fan yourself to cool down, but back then it was also the status symbol for a samurai to own it. Refer to our website for further detail.
What is "sensu" ?
- Tea ceremony became popular among generals during Sengoku period. Tea house was a very small space where only a handful samurais could enter inside - it was simply a place to enjoy tea ceremony. Although they could not take their swords inside, they always made sure to take their “sensu” fans with them inside the tea house.
- Samurais received tea services inside a quiet, peaceful space, which for them was a rare moment when they could just relax & forget about continuous, life-endangering battles during Sengoku period.
