Legends of the "Hojo uroko" design

  • Hojo uroko design that the later Hojo family used has 3 scales arranged in an isosceles shape, and is different from the crest design of the earlier Hojo family.
  • Legend has it that these scales are not from fish but rather from a serpent.
  • When Hojo Tokimasa visited a shrine in Enoshima to pray to Benzaiten for prosperity, a beautiful woman suddenly appeared. She gave him a prophecy from God before changing herself into a serpent. She then disappeared into the ocean, leaving behind 3 draconic scales, which then became the basis of the family crest design.
