 Sengoku Period
1467~1603

Medieval Japan was called "Sengoku period".In Japan from the middle of the 15 century to the beginning of the 17 century, many samurai fought for territories. The leaders of these samurai were called "Sengoku-busho".Brave warlords and clever warlords expanded their territory.
 The smart and tricky "Sengoku-busho" were also good at using ninjas.
 
In the Sengoku period, this warlord ruled the territory and small provinces were scattered.In the war, they fought by raising a flag with the family crest of the leader to distinguish the enemy from the ally.

Edo period(Tokugawa period)
1603~1867

In the early 17 century,  Tokugawa Ieyasu unified all "Sengoku-busho" and became "Shogun". He seized real political power in Japan. Since then, the Edo period lasted for 260 years.During that period, there was no national war, and Japanese traditional culture such as ukiyoe and kabuki developed greatly.
 
In the Edo period, family crest came to be used not only by "Sengoku-busho" but also by many samurai.Family crest began to be drawn on the formal dress of samurai so that the family lineage could be identified.
